Discovering Lugana from La Perla del Garda

A Gourmet convivial to discover the Lugana Perla del Garda of the Woman of Wine Giovanna Prandini, who produces wines on the family farm that are characterized by beautiful acidity and flavor that enhance the Trebbiano di Lugana.

Although the production regulations call for the presence of complementary white grape varieties, as long as they are non-aromatic, for a quota of 10%, today producers in the area tend to make their Lugana exclusively with pure Turbiana grapes, declining it into as many as five different types: the basic Lugana, the Superiore, the Riserva, the Vendemmia Tardiva and the Spumante.

The various declinations were tasted in combination with fish dishes prepared by Gaetano del Gaetano Dipper: the Lugana Perla 2018 with chickpea velouté with shellfish, mollusks and fried bread croutons. A wine that has delicate floral scents on the nose and fruity notes of apricot with a hint of almond, while the sip is fresh, pleasantly citrusy and long.

Lugana Spumante DOP, Metodo Classico Brut Nature 2011 with candied lemon rice, caprino mantecato with cuttlefish ragout. The bubbles are fine and persistent, the nose is aromatic and fruity with an elegant bouquet, while the palate is fresh and savory.

The 2016 Lugana Riserva Madre Perla was paired with catch of the day with crispy vegetables and soy. The Lugana Riserva is aged for at least 24 months, 6 of which in bottle, has brighter color tones, more evolved and complex aromas, with notes of flint and balsamic hints, a warmer minerality on the palate, but still enveloping, savory and persistent.

Finally, the Lugana Vendemmia Tardiva 2013 paired with flaky chantilly cream and berries. This Lugana is in fact made with a overmaturation on the vine through late harvesting of the grapes, which are thus richer and more concentrated, give Lugana a softer, denser profile, but not overly sweet, because the residual sugar is effectively balanced by acidity.

Thanks to our Consul Alexander Bonelli for the magnificent organization, to our president of the National Association The Women of WineDonatella Cinelli Colombini for the introduction to Joan and for her words of encouragement, always invaluable!

Glad to have met you personally Stefania Pianigiani and to have seen you again John Pellicci: I hope there are soon with both of us opportunities to taste together!

Cheers and see you next time! 🥂
