Vinitaly 2024: Amarone, an exceptional masterclass!

Vinitaly 2024 closed with a positive balance of 97,000 attendees of which more than one-third were foreign operators (growing U.S., Germany, UK, China and Canada), intensifying the path of internationalization.

As Poggio ai Laghi we were not exhibiting because ours is a B2C business, I still planned to be there for updates, training, networking and engagements with theWomen's Wine Association: very positive also my balance between masterclasses, organized meetings, fruitful chance meetings and greetings to friends and colleagues.

Among the master classes I had the pleasure of attending was one organized by theAssociation of Historical Families and conducted by Othmar Kiem e Simon Staffler by Falstaff  titled "Amarone fine and contemporary wine: exploring elegance in 2009 and 2019 vintages."

The Historic Families are located mainly in Valpolicella Classica, which coincides with the area west of Verona, and to a small extent in the central Valpantena and eastern Valpolicella.

Only indigenous grape varieties for Amarone: Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, Molinara and Oseleta, and a production technique of drying the grapes for at least 60 days.

The masterclass was introduced by a docu-film: a fantastic storytelling about Amarone through the direct accounts of 13 representatives of the 13 families, each with his or her own personality and manner but with common values of presenting Amarone as a contemporary wine, to be enjoyed daily, on every occasion.

A true journey experience into Amarone and Valpolicella through a comparison of the 2009 vintage, the date of the Association's inception, and 2019, the current Amarone vintage.
