Wine & Siena 2022: Il Borro's vertical, an exceptional masterclass

The VI edition of Wine & Siena 2022 - Masterpieces of Taste finally returns after the covid in a beautiful 3-day March at Palazzo Squarcialupi and Santa Maria della Scala, preceding all the previews and food and wine events of the year

So many wineries and so many interesting wines tasted, but in this year of restart I dedicate my piece on the event to one of the masterclasses organized at the Grand Hotel Continental: the Verticale of Il Borro Toscana Rosso IGT by Il Borro of the Ferragamo family, held by Salvatore Ferragamo himself. Tasting the 2018, 2017, 2008, 2004 and 1999 vintages-the first ever!

The Ferragamo family's Borro stands in Valdarno at the foot of Pratomagno. Medieval origins for the property acquired by Ferruccio in 1993 and currently run by his children Salvatore and Vittoria. Five business areas hotellerie, catering (L'Osteria del Borro, a gourmet restaurant and the Borro Tuscan Bistro), wine, vegetable garden and food: all organic. And sustainable is the vision: in 2020 Il Borro will publish its first sustainability report, demonstrating the ongoing search for balance between nature, man and territory.

A production oriented to the highest quality, respecting the land and nature. This is the philosophy behind the creation of wines of strong territorial identity with vineyard management according to the principles of organic farming, with the inclusion of some biodynamic procedures,

Native grape varieties, such as Sangiovese are grown together with international varieties, such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, which give rise to red, white and rosé wines, metodo classico and distilled spirits and vinsanto, all strong expressions of the territory.

50% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Syrah in more recent vintages, while adding a 5% of Petit Verdot in older ones

2018 intense nose, red fruits and pepper, tannins still a bit rustic

2017 intense nose with red and black fruits, underbrush and spices, balsamic note, already round and elegant, persistent and nice finish

2008 intense nose of violet and ripe fruits with great freshness and silky tannins

2004 color still very vibrant, nose of sweet spice, cocoa and coffee background, velvety tannins

1999 vibrancy and clarity, nice toastiness, ripe almond and walnut, still important acid shoulder, ripe and silky tannins: a thrill to taste Borro's first wine!

A pleasure to personally meet Salvatore Ferragamo!
